Eagle Project

Adam organized and completed his Eagle project on February 5, 2011.  He had a lot of help from many family, friends and leaders.  What was the project, you ask?  We made rice bags for patients at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital.  Nurses will heat the rice bag for patients to help warm up the IV site, to help warm hands or feet, etc.

Adam's goal was to make 200 bags.  We made 544!  Way to go!

Learning to Sew

Lyssa and her 2 cousins, Amber and Sarah, were invited to Grandma's for a sewing lesson. They also got to have a sleepover! It was very exciting. They were able to choose some summer fabric to make pajama bottoms. Grandma took them shopping to purchase tops that would match the colors in the fabric they chose. Grandma was worried that they would all fight over one of the fabrics. That didn't happen, though. Each girl liked a different kind.

Cousins

My brother's 3 children who live with their mom are here visiting for the summer. We had the opportunity to have everyone together at my mom's for a visit. For the past 9 years, there have been 5 grandchildren on my side of the family -- I have 2; my brother has 3.


This past year, my sister was able to adopt a girl and my brother and his wife were able to have a girl as well. So, 2 girls have been added to the group. Here is a picture of all 7 of them:

Ellie was pretty unhappy, which is very unusual. She is normally extremely happy and smiley. We were all just laughing at how upset she was to not be held by her mom. Gwen had been happy, until Ellie started crying so hard. Gwen decided she needed to be sympathetic to Ellie, so she started crying as well. That just made us laugh harder!

Girl Scout Overnighter

In May, our Girl Scout troop, along with 3 other troops, went on an overnight camping trip to the Heber Valley Girls Camp. It is a beautiful camp the Church has built. Anyway, we were responsible for Friday night dinner. The girls chose to cook ravioli with red sauce and green salad with brownies for dessert. Everyone had plenty to eat. I was happy at how well all of the girls in our troop (there are 8 of them and 7 were able to come) helped in the making of the meal and in the clean up. Guess what happened that night?



We couldn't believe it either! Most hadn't come prepared for this kind of weather. I mean, there was only 1 more week of May! We all loaded into one cabin to do our badge work in the morning. Here's a picture of Lyssa waiting for instructions:



She didn't know I was trying to take her picture, so she moved. Sorry about that!

We had a really fun time. The sun came out later in the morning and melted all the snow. By the time we left mid-afternoon, it was all gone! If you hadn't been there, you probably wouldn't have known it snowed at all.

Show Choir Tour 2010 Video

Choir Tour 2010

As a member of Cyprus High's Show Choir, Adam had the opportunity to go on the Choir Tour.  The choir director is wonderful!  He put together a terrific tour to Disney World in Florida.  I was able to tag along as a chaperone.  Since Brian would be working long hours (doesn't have vacation time quite yet), I was concerned about Lyssa being home all by herself for basically 6 days.  Adam suggested that we arrange for her to visit our friends who live in Mesa, Arizona.  They were going to be home and were gracious enough to allow Lyssa to visit them.  She had a terrific time!  Thanks, Dexters!  We love you!

Adam and I met the others at the airport on Saturday, June 5th, at 1:00 p.m.  We flew to Atlanta where we changed planes and flew on to Orlando.  We arrived in Orlando to temperatures in the low 90's and humidity so high you could cut it with a knife.  It was also very late there -- 11:30 p.m.  By the time we gathered the luggage and were shuttled to the motel and were given our room assignments, it was close to 1:00 in the morning.

Sunday, we got up and rode on a bus to Cocoa Beach where we were able to spend about 3 hours.

After playing in the ocean, we rode back to the motel and changed clothes.  Everyone walked down the street to the Arabian Nights Dinner Show.  The students performed as a pre-show and then we were able to go in and be seated.  The dinner was delicious and the entertainment was pretty good.  We had a good time.  After walking back to the motel, some went swimming and others went to bed.

Monday morning, we got up early and loaded up on the busses in order to go to a local high school for our  students to perform for their students.  The choir director at that high school has been trying to get a Show Choir started for a couple of years and had invited our school to perform for them so the students there could get a feel for what it could be like.  Our students performed twice.  The students there were very appreciative.  It was a good experience.

We then loaded back up on the busses and headed to Disney World.  Our students were scheduled to perform at Downtown Disney that afternoon.  I was able to be one of the chaperones that went "backstage" with them as they changed into their outfits that day.  Once everyone was ready, we headed to the stage.  Here are some pictures of Adam performing that first day:

After they were done performing, we went back to where they had changed into their outfits for them to change back out of them.  We were returned to the main transporation hub of Disney World and then scattered from there.  I was having a difficult time meeting up with some of the other adults I had arranged to go around with, so Adam graciously allowed me to hang out with him and 2 of his friends.  We had fun riding some rides and eating dinner and walking and walking and walking.  Here's Adam in front of the Epcot Center:

Tuesday and Wednesday were more of the same -- up early in the morning to go Disney World, taking a break to perform, and then having more fun at the different parks.  Adam found a group of friends to go around with.  I was able to be with a couple of other adults.  One of them was on a mission to see and do as much as possible.  We definitely achieved that!  It was a lot of fun.

According to my pedometer, we averaged about 9 miles a day each day.  I didn't have any problems walking with the ulcer on my leg.  Instead, I developed HUGE blisters on both feet!  That was more of a problem than the ulcer!  Pretty crazy!  Tuesday, the students performed during the day again.  On Wednesday, they performed at night.  It was great!  The lights really added to the performance.  I have a couple of videos of their songs that I want to post here but can't figure it out yet.  Stay tuned!

After their performance Wednesday night, the parks were all closed so we headed back to the hotel for swimming and sleep!

Thursday, we were able to sleep in and pack.  Adam and I and his roommates went for breakfast at The Waffle House.  Yummy!  Adam asked me why we hadn't been there before, as the breakfast that was included at the motel was just a glass of juice and Little Debbie's sweet rolls and Gems donuts.  Not very filling for teenagers!  After we checked out of the motel, we rode the busses once more to return to the airport.  Here's a picture of the entire group prior to our leaving:

We were able to return home on a direct flight from Orlando, arriving about 8:45 p.m.  It was a great trip!
